1 Day in Aurangabad — Why I Rarely Recommend It

A single day in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) means choosing one site — Ajanta or Ellora — and accepting that the other, along with everything else the region offers, is off the table.

If your one day is for Ajanta:
A 6:00 AM departure, the full day at the caves, return by evening. This is a complete experience of Ajanta itself, but it means flying or training into a region with two UNESCO sites and seeing only one.

If your one day is for Ellora:
Given Ellora’s proximity (30 km), a one-day visit can realistically include Daulatabad Fort and Grishneshwar Temple alongside the caves themselves — making a single Ellora day more complete than a single Ajanta day, simply due to geography.

My honest take:
I rarely recommend a 1-day Aurangabad stop unless someone’s broader India itinerary genuinely cannot accommodate more. If you have come this far, the second day to see both UNESCO sites is almost always worth finding, even if it means cutting time elsewhere in your trip.

💡 Tip: If you are truly limited to one day and have to choose, I lean toward Ellora for most first-time visitors — the Kailasa Temple’s immediate, visceral impact tends to land more powerfully on a first encounter than Ajanta’s paintings, which reward returning attention more than a single rushed visit allows.

2 Days in Aurangabad — The Standard Recommendation

Day 1 — Ajanta:

Day 2 — Ellora plus the surrounding sites:
Ellora’s proximity means the second day naturally extends to include Daulatabad Fort (directly on the route) and Grishneshwar Temple (1 km from Ellora). This single day covers more ground than the Ajanta day, simply because everything sits closer together.

What 2 days does not include:
The city’s own heritage — Bibi ka Maqbara, Aurangabad Caves, Panchakki — and any extension toward Shirdi or Lonar Crater.

Why I recommend this as the default:
Two days is the minimum that lets both Ajanta and Ellora receive a genuinely full day each, rather than compressing both into a single rushed visit. I have seen travelers attempt to combine both sites in one day, and I would not recommend it — the 100 km between Ajanta and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), combined with the depth both sites deserve, makes this combination genuinely unsatisfying when rushed.

This is the duration I suggest when someone tells me they want to actually experience the region, not just check off the two headline UNESCO sites.

Day 1 — Ajanta (as above)

Day 2 — Ellora, Daulatabad Fort, Grishneshwar Temple (as above)

Day 3 — City heritage, or a half-day extension:
With the third day, you have real options:

• City heritage circuit: Bibi ka Maqbara, Aurangabad Caves, and Panchakki, all close to the city center, give you a genuine half-day to full-day exploring Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) itself rather than only its outlying sites.
• Shirdi half-day: With the Samruddhi Expressway now cutting travel time significantly, a morning Shirdi visit combined with an afternoon city heritage stop is a realistic single-day plan that was not practical before the expressway opened.
• Unhurried departure day: Simply using the third day as a lower-pressure morning before your onward travel, rather than packing in another full site.

My honest take:
Three days is where this region stops feeling like a heritage checklist and starts feeling like a place you actually visited. The city sites — particularly Bibi ka Maqbara and Aurangabad Caves — are genuinely worthwhile and consistently underrated by travelers who only plan for Ajanta and Ellora.

💡 Tip: I generally place the city heritage day last rather than first. Arriving and immediately doing Ajanta or Ellora means starting your trip with the most significant sites while you are freshest; the city day works well as a lighter, more relaxed final day before departure.

4+ Days — When Lonar Crater Enters the Picture

Lonar Crater’s distance (140 km, 3 to 3.5 hours each way with no expressway shortcut) and the fact that it rewards an overnight stay for the best sunrise and sunset light mean it genuinely needs its own dedicated time rather than being squeezed into a 2-3 day Ajanta-Ellora trip.

4-day itinerary:
Days 1-2 as the standard Ajanta-Ellora plan, day 3 for city heritage or Shirdi, day 4 as a Lonar day trip (long, but doable given the extra day already built in) or the start of an overnight Lonar extension.

5+ days:
Allows a proper overnight Ajanta-Ellora-Lonar circuit without backtracking through Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) for each site, plus full time for the city heritage circuit and potentially Shirdi as well.

💡 Tip: I do not recommend adding Lonar Crater to a trip shorter than 4 days unless you are comfortable with a genuinely long single day (6-7 hours of driving) for a destination that rewards a slower pace.
